Haley Schaffer is a partner in Maslon's Litigation Group and member of Maslon's Appellate Practice Group. She has represented local and national clients in a wide range of high-stakes business disputes in state and federal courts throughout the country. Haley has particular expertise in ownership and governance disputes in corporations, partnerships, and limited liability companies. She also concentrates on various aspects of intellectual property disputes, including licensing, trade secrets, unfair competition, trademark, patent, and royalty-related cases. Additionally, Haley has significant appellate practice experience.

Haley has repeatedly received state-wide recognition for her litigation and appellate skills, being voted a "Rising Star" by Minnesota Law and Politics each year she has practiced. She also frequently presents to the Minnesota Bar on a wide range of civil litigation and appellate topics and publishes regularly on these topics, including co-authoring two chapters in the recent Eighth Circuit Appellate Practice Manual and authoring the "Notes and Trends" column in the Civil Litigation section of Bench & Bar of Minnesota.

Prior to joining Maslon, Haley completed a clerkship for the Honorable David S. Doty of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. Haley received her law degree, cum laude, from Northwestern University Law School, where she was a member of Northwestern's law review. She also is a member of the Order of the Coif and a recipient of the Bell, Boyd & Lloyd Appellate Advocacy Award. She received her Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Princeton University.

  • Biomedical Design, Inc. vs. Medtronic, Inc. Successfully arbitrated licensing and development dispute regarding the method for tissue fixation to be used in heart valves.
  • Cardiovention, Inc. v. Medtronic, Inc. Successfully litigated licensing and development dispute regarding cardiopulmonary bypass systems.
  • Travel Tags v. UV Color Inc. Served as counsel in patent infringement litigation for patent related to secure debit cards. Obtained favorable Markman ruling from the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota.
  • E.I. Du Pont De Nemours and Co. v. Medtronic, Inc. Currently serving as counsel for Medtronic in a licensing and royalty dispute with Du Pont over technology used in balloon catheters.
  • MedCam v. MCNC. Successfully represented MCNC in $165 million dispute over a development and licensing agreement for technology related to optical switching devices.
  • Aiu v. ValueVision Media, Inc. Represented ValueVision Media, Inc. in multi-million dollar litigation brought by former CEO of the publically traded home shopping network.
  • Kroll v. Kroll. Litigated ownership and governance of a family business.
  • Babushkina v. Loabneh. Litigated ownership and governance of health services business.
  • Fine Impressions, Inc. v. Alvin James Group. Successfully arbitrated breach of contract dispute.
  • Galilee, Inc. v. James Tower. Awarded summary judgment on fraud claim.
  • In Re: Kaiser Aluminum Corporation, et al. v. Law Debenture Trust Company of New York. Successfully represented Kaiser Aluminum Corporation in multi-million dollar appeal.
  • Triple Five of Minnesota, Inc. v. Simon. Court reversed remedy awarded in partnership dispute involving ownership of Mall of America.
  • Antone v. Mirviss. Appellate counsel for Minnesota Lawyers Mutual as amicus curiae in case involving novel interpretation of Minnesota's statute of limitations for malpractice actions arising from drafting of antenuptial agreements.
  • Brunswick Corporation v. Genmar Holdings, Inc. Court affirmed district court decision to award no damages.
  • Merrill Corporation and Merrill Communications LLC v. Peter Day and Robert Stensby, et al. Successfully opposed motion for expedited review.
  • In re a Petition for Instructions to Construe Basic Resolution 876 of the Port Authority of the City of St. Paul. Successfully petitioned court to file amicus brief.
  • Mona Savig and Robert Savig v. First National Bank of Omaha and Messerli & Kramer, P.A. Successfully briefed to the Minnesota Supreme Court a question of Minnesota law certified to the Minnesota Supreme Court by the federal district court.
  • Richards v. Marthe, No. A10-1098 (2010). Successfully argued appeal before Minnesota Supreme Court.
