Andy Jacobson is a partner and the head of Maslon’s Real Estate Group.   His practice covers a broad range of commercial real estate issues, with particular focus on commercial and retail leasing, land use, telecommunications, as well as design and construction-related agreements.  Andy is a frequent author and speaker on real estate subjects and teaches Real Estate Transactions at the University of St. Thomas School of Law.  A graduate of Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, Andy is also a registered architect, having earned his Bachelors of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, and practiced architecture prior to attending law school.  Andy is a member of both the Minnesota and California bars.

Experience

  • Represented several Fortune 500 companies in the management of domestic real estate portfolios, including acquisitions, sales, leasing, construction and related matters.
  • Represented businesses in various sectors of the retail industry (e.g., health clubs, restaurants, jewelry, home decor, beauty salons) in the negotiation of leases in strip centers, power centers, major shopping malls, and urban entertainment centers.
  • Represented individual, industry, and institutional owners in the drafting and negotiation of complex design, engineering, and construction-related agreements, between the owner and architects, engineers and contractors, using various formats from AIA-based documents through custom-drafted agreements, in a variety of deal structures, including design/build agreements.
  • Represented property owners and telecommunications providers in the drafting and negotiation of leases and licenses, including tower site leases, rooftop antenna agreements and building access licenses.
  • Represented property owner in a complex Torrens registration, involving over 16 acres of urban land, more than 125 separate lots and 20 separate tax parcels. Represented a variety of restaurant and night club owners in the negotiation of various leases in stand-alone properties, major shopping centers, and urban mixed-use centers.
  • Represented nationally based aggregate producer in the sale of various quarry lands, cement plants, and other assets, including well over 500 total acres of land.
  • Represented a coalition of major real estate industry groups, defending against the institution of federal and state rules that would establish "forced access" to private property.
  • Represented several aggregate industry companies in the protection of over 4,000 acres of prime operating quarry land and freeway access from undue infringement by incompatible proposed adjacent land uses.
  • Successfully defended a Class A office building owner against an attempted forced access condemnation action by a nationally based competitive local exchange company.
