2008 Summer Associate

The Summer Associate program at Maslon, Edelman Borman & Brand is no ordinary summer associate experience. The work you'll do is challenging, exciting and fulfilling. The relationships you'll develop with partners, attorneys and staff are open and affirming. And the skills that you'll develop in research, writing and communication with clients and colleagues are invaluable.

Maslon treats its summer associates like developing attorneys. You'll be put on important, time-sensitive and engaging research and writing projects, and made a part of "the team" on litigation and corporate matters. I was especially interested in litigation, and was brought onto the litigation teams on several cases, researching critical legal and strategic issues, writing memoranda to attorneys, and drafting legal memoranda and briefs to the court. I got to witness firsthand the excitement, pressure-cooker deadlines and challenge of filing and responding to litigation on the spur-of-the-moment, and was brought into strategy meetings and kept in the loop at each stage of the cases on which I was part of "the team." I was provided with a steady flow of diverse and challenging assignments from the program coordinators, ranging from intellectual property and employment law, to death penalty mitigation and first amendment law, but also allowed and encouraged to contact attorneys directly to explore areas of litigation that were of special interest to me.

They call it the "Maslon Family" for a reason - your colleagues, mentors and program coordinators are nurturers, and will both push you to excel and guide you as you attempt to reach your goals. This isn't a sink-or-swim, survival of the fittest, macho legal environment. You'll be assigned a partner mentor, associate mentor and a writing-specific mentor who will check in on you to make sure that you understand your assignments, and will offer help with legal, social and professional questions. You'll be befriended by partners, associates and staff alike; there's little to no hierarchy in this environment, and the relationships that I developed with senior partners at the firm especially, are ones that I'll treasure for a lifetime. You'll be welcomed by attorneys at summer associate and firm events, and taken out to lunch by attorneys interested in getting to know you and in being of assistance to you in your development as an attorney.

This summer associate experience has exceeded all of the expectations that I had going in. If you're looking to work for a firm that provides challenging, high stakes civil litigation, in a collegiate and welcoming environment, there is no better place. Maslon's summer associate experience gets my highest recommendations.
