2003 Summer Associate
Maslon Edelman Borman & Brand's Summer Associate Program surpassed all of my expectations. I thought I would be stuck in a library, writing research memos for partners I barely knew. That simply didn't happen. Even when I wrote memos, I felt like I was part of a team of lawyers serving a client. The partners and associates took time to explain the litigation strategy and purpose of each assignment. And I left the library.
Every week I had at least one observation opportunity. Among other things, I attended a mediation, oral arguments, and settlement negotiations. I also worked with a partner on a pro bono case that went to trial in District Court. This invaluable experience included deposing an expert witness and defending my client during his deposition. I even participated in the trial by delivering an opening statement and conducting direct and cross examinations of witnesses.
Summer associates at Maslon do more than just work. The program has a wide variety of fun activities that allow the summer associates to get to know all the practice groups in the firm. Besides the typical happy hours and dinner parties, our social calendar included a Saints Baseball game, a theater show, water-skiing, and a golf/spa day. By spending time with attorneys out of the office, I realized that Maslon fosters and accepts individuality. I was surprised to find such an accepting culture in a law firm as sophisticated as Maslon.
