When I asked a friend for his candid opinion of various law firms in the Twin Cities, he told me that Maslon has a reputation for delivering top-notch service to their clients and for being some of the genuinely nicest attorneys in town. During my summer at Maslon, this reputation was more than proved true. It was surpassed.
My primary goal for the summer was to improve my legal writing. Maslon supported that goal in many ways. Whether I was attending a legal writing seminar led by one of the most highly-regarded legal writers in the country, going to in-house trainings led by expert legal writers, checking in with my writing mentor regularly, or getting thoughtful and timely feedback on my work from assigning attorneys (yes, even partners!), I felt like I had all the resources I needed to achieve my goal. Throughout my summer I got the distinct impression that everyone I met, including my fellow summer associates, wanted me to be successful as much as I did. That level of support-and total absence of competition-was a pleasant surprise.
Of course, a summer at Maslon is more than just work. I truly enjoyed getting to know so many great people in a social context too. There were several parties, a Twins game, an afternoon boating, and best of all, the retreat. My friend was right; Maslon attorneys are wonderful people.
Maslon is the kind of place everyone tells you does not exist when you're in law school. After all, if you want to work at any respectable law firm you're going to have to do soul-crushing work for 12 hours a day for at least three years before you do anything interesting, right? That's simply not how Maslon operates. I would enthusiastically recommend Maslon to any law student interested in building their career doing interesting work alongside smart and welcoming people.
