Mary Vasaly Named President-Elect of Minnesota Women Lawyers, Receives Ramsey County Bar Association Pro Bono Award


Mary VasalyMINNEAPOLIS -- Twin Cities attorney, Mary Vasaly, has been named President-Elect of Minnesota Women Lawyers, and will begin her term as President of MWL in one year. Mary also received the Ramsey County Bar Association Pro Bono Award for her service to Ramsey County residents with Children's Law Center of Minnesota. Mary is a partner with the law firm of Maslon Edelman Borman & Brand, practicing in the areas of civil litigation and appeals.

Established in 1972, Minnesota Women Lawyers has a membership of over 1,200 attorneys, judges, law students and legal employers. Through programs and initiatives, MWL works to support the professional and leadership development of women lawyers, to advocate on behalf of women lawyers within the legal profession, and to support social action initiatives to end discrimination in the justice system and promote equality of women in society.

The Ramsey County Bar Association was established in 1884 and serves its 2,600 members through continuing legal education, professional development, networking, and opportunities for service to the community. Children's Law Center of Minnesota is comprised of volunteer attorneys, social workers and staff who work to represent foster care children in court.

For more than twenty years, Mary Vasaly has practiced in the areas of appeals, probate/trust litigation and commercial litigation. She has appeared in the United States Supreme Court, and has tried cases and argued appeals in state and federal courts in Minnesota and other states. Mary co-edited the Eighth Circuit Appellate Practice Manual, now in its third edition, and The Amicus Brief, 2nd ed. She also teaches Appellate Advocacy at the University of St. Thomas Law School. She was recently named one of the top 25 appellate Super Lawyer by Minnesota Law & Politics and, in 2003, was named a Lawyer of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer. Mary is active in a number of bar organizations, currently serving as the Chair of the ABA TTIPS' Appellate Advocacy Committee. She sits on the governing council of the Civil Litigation section of the Minnesota State Bar Association and was recently named Secretary of the Hennepin County Bar Association, starting a four-year track to the presidency of that organization. Mary is a 1983 cum laude graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School.
