Maslon is pleased to announce that Leora Maccabee, attorney in Maslon’s Litigation Group, has been named a 2015 "Up & Coming Attorney" by Minnesota Lawyer. The recognition highlights lawyers in their first 10 years of practice who have already distinguished themselves by their achievements. The criteria for selection includes professional accomplishment and leadership service to the community and the profession.
Leora practices in the areas of general business, trust & estate, and tort & product liability litigation. She prides herself on offering exceptional legal service to businesses—from multimillion-dollar companies to startups—facing conflicts and challenges that at minimum threaten to distract from the products they are selling and services they are providing to our community, and at maximum are bet-the-company matters. As a trust and estate litigator, Leora partners with Maslon's Estate Planning Group to handle contested matters in the probate courts, aggressively and effectively representing her clients in disputes regarding the obligations of fiduciaries such as a trustees, executors, conservators, and guardians as well as the interpretation of testamentary instruments. She also actively contributes to the profession through presentations and publications.
As part of her practice, Leora is committed to offering pro bono representation to low-income individuals. She volunteers her services with the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota's Pro Se Project, the Volunteer Lawyers Network, and the American Civil Liberties Union, Minnesota Chapter—and was recently recognized as a 2014 North Star Lawyer.
When she isn't being an attorney, Leora is heavily involved in the Jewish and general communities. Of particular note, she founded the Minneapolis-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit Jewfolk Media, Inc, whose current project, TCJewfolk.com, is a multi-author daily online magazine and virtual community space designed to increase the number of quality Jewish moments experienced by people of all ages and backgrounds, whether those moments be religious, cultural, educational, or social. The organization has grown significantly under Leora's leadership and now operates with two full-time staff; Leora is President of its Board of Directors.
As a result of her work in the community as well as the legal profession, Leora has been honored with several awards, including a 2014 Natan/NEXT Grant for Social Entrepreneurs, the Twin Cities Cardozo Society's 2013 Arthur T. Pfefer Memorial Award, and the Minneapolis Jewish Federation's 2013 Tychman Family "Young Leadership" Award and 2012 "Real Mensches" of Minneapolis Award.
