Business Development Manager
Maslon is seeking a Business Development Manager.
Position Description: The Business Development Manager will work directly with attorneys and other key stakeholders to execute the firm’s strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening client relationships, growing revenue, and raising the firm’s profile. The Business Development Manager will be responsible for supporting the firm’s business development initiatives by organizing and leveraging information about the firm's practice areas and lawyers, as well as providing research and analysis about clients, competitors, markets, trends, and industries. This position will report to the Director of Marketing and Business Development and collaborate closely with the firm’s Marketing Communications Manager, as well as the Marketing and Business Development Specialist.
Skills & Experience:
- Impeccable interpersonal skills. This includes a high degree of discretion and business acumen, as well as a willingness to build collaborative relationships with stakeholders both inside and outside of the firm.
- Experience and comfort with influencing decision-making among senior leadership. This includes generating buy-in for starting, continuing, or stopping business development initiatives based on their perceived ROI.
- Strong communication skills. This includes clear and compelling written and verbal communication, as well as experience creating or overseeing the creation of polished presentation materials.
- Ability to work under pressure when necessary. This includes navigating competing deadlines and shifting priorities with positivity, flexibility, and enthusiasm.
- Strong project management skills. This includes leading working teams and “managing up” as needed to advance initiatives or accomplish goals.
- Ownership and accountability. This includes a high degree of responsibility for the success of projects or initiatives within the position's purview, as well as comfort with holding others accountable.
- Desire to be in the office. Maslon currently employs a hybrid work environment. In-office presence at least three days a week is particularly important for the success of the Business Development Manager.
- Comfort with working both independently and as part of a team.
- Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms.
- 5 years of professional experience. Experience in a law firm or other professional services firm preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or a related field.
Responsibilities:
- Coaching and training. Provide coaching and support to individual lawyers to help them identify and capitalize on business development opportunities. Support lawyer training on effective marketing and business development strategies and techniques.
- Pitches and proposals. Lead the Marketing team’s involvement in all pitches, proposals, and RFP responses, ensuring the inclusion of relevant experience and project managing through completion.
- Business development research. Lead the Marketing team’s fulfillment of all requests for business analysis, market research, and competitive intelligence. Collaborate with the firm’s library services and leverage a suite of research tools to produce intel on clients and potential clients quickly and effectively.
- Attorney profile-raising. Identify key profile-raising opportunities—such as conferences, organizational involvement, speaking engagements, and writing opportunities—that will raise the firm’s profile in targeted industries or practice areas. Collaborate with the broader Marketing team to ensure each is supported, promoted, and maximized in terms of business development value.
- Events and sponsorships. Lead the business development strategy underpinning events and sponsorships, maximizing the business development value of each. Collaborate with broader Marketing team on planning, promotion, and execution. Identify and evaluate new opportunities. Make recommendations about firm’s involvement.
- Experience management. Leverage relationships with attorneys and involvement in practice group meetings to stay abreast of key matters, deals, and other client work. Collaborate with the broader Marketing team to ensure that publishable results are promoted on the firm website, in awards submissions, through press releases, and other channels as appropriate.
- Client feedback. Support client feedback interviews and surveys, as well as other client-specific programs such as lunch and learns, site visits, presentations, etc.
- Business plans. Assist in the development and implementation of business plans to support the firm’s strategy. Monitor attorneys’ progress and provide accountability and support.
- Marketing content. Leverage understanding of practice groups, attorneys, and client relationships to advise on marketing content such as attorney bios, award nominations, survey responses, client success narratives, collateral, website copy, legal alerts, newsletters, and press releases.
- Lateral onboarding. Support the full integration of lateral hires to ensure continuity of their existing client relationships and successful incorporation into ongoing Maslon business development efforts.
